Khamenei aide, Trump go to 'war' over Soleimani as protests threaten to spill into US-Iran battle?

Published on Jan 14, 2026 06:58 pm IST

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf issued a fierce warning to U.S. President Donald Trump, invoking the legacy of slain Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and accusing Washington of failing to weaken the so-called “axis of resistance.” Speaking in Tehran, Qalibaf said the resistance movement has instead expanded globally, claiming it has placed Israel under pressure. In response, President Donald Trump publicly encouraged Iranians to continue protesting against the Islamic Republic, urging them to document abuses and hold officials accountable. Trump announced he had cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials, imposed new tariffs on anyone doing business with Iran, and warned that Iranian authorities would “pay a very big price” if violence against protesters continued.
