Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, delivered a sharp condemnation of the recent U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran during a UN Security Council meeting. Nebenzya rejected the framing of the session under the “Middle East” agenda item, stating that Russia and China had requested it be categorized as a threat to international peace and security. He described the strikes by the United States and Israel as an “unprovoked act of armed aggression” against a sovereign UN member state, accusing Washington and West Jerusalem of undermining diplomacy at the height of negotiations between Tehran and Washington in Geneva. Nebenzya alleged the attacks targeted senior Iranian leadership and civilian nuclear facilities, raising grave concerns about nuclear safety and regional escalation. Citing casualty figures reported by Iranian authorities, he expressed condolences over civilian deaths, including claims of a strike on a girls’ school in Minab. He warned that the actions risk triggering a broader humanitarian and economic catastrophe across the Gulf.
