Trump says he has 'very good relationship' with Modi but baffles audience over India tariffs

Published on Jan 07, 2026 03:26 am IST

In a rambling boast about tariffs and trade, Donald Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally sought a meeting after India ordered 68 Apache helicopters, saying he had a “very good relationship” with Modi but that the Indian leader “was not happy” because New Delhi was now paying higher tariffs. Trump insisted those duties were making America “rich,” recounting how officials supposedly “found” an extra $39 billion in revenue he said came from tariffs, and bragged that the U.S. was set to rake in $650 billion while tightening national security.
