Demolition experts conducted a controlled explosion of a disused power station chimney in Kent. The demolition of the 244-metre Grain A Power Station chimney in Kent, southeast England, makes it the tallest ever concrete structure in the UK to be brought down. The demolition created some 40,000 tonnes of concrete rubble and stacks of dust and smoke. The power station began its operations in 1979, serving more than one million homes, according to media reports. It closed in December 2012 when it was deemed no longer economically viable to keep producing electricity, according to media reports which quoted a spokesman for the energy company.
