IS militants have destroyed the 1400 yr old St Elijah's monastery in Iraq, a sacred place of worship for Iraqi Christians. Satellite photos have confirmed what church authorities and preservationists had feared. The monastery was built by an Assyrian Christian monk around the year 590. St. Elijah's now joins the religious and historic sites that were lost to the islamic State in the ancient cities of Nineveh, Palmyra and Hatra.
