Watch | Marutaro the famous Instagram dog with 2.2 million followers

This eight-year-old Japanese Shiba Inu called Marutaro has been a famous dog on Instagram for several years, bringing a smile to the faces of his more than 2.2 million followers.

Marutaro is a Japanese Shiba Inu and lives in Tokyo with his owner, Shinjiro Ono, who says he was more surprised than anyone that Maru's popularity took off. Shiba Inus, with their pointy ears and noses, are a popular breed in Japan.

Ono thinks the secret to Maru's popularity is his round face, comparing the dog's look to Japanese cartoon characters like Doraemon or Pokemon. Marutaro's appeal is worldwide, with followers in the United States, Brazil, Thailand, China and Taipei.
