Australian lawmaker Jeremy Buckingham set Queensland's Condamine River on fire on Tuesday (April 12) to show the apparent impact of the coal seam gas industry and fracking operations nearby.In the video, Greens Member of Parliament Buckingham can be seen putting a lighter to the river, and appears shocked when the river ignites. According to Buckingham's news release, methane gas was first discovered in the Condamine River near Chinchilla in 2012 where coal seam gas wells had been drilled by three companies nearby. Coal seam gas production involves pumping large amounts of water out of the ground to release gas trapped in coal seams. Fracking, which involves blasting large amounts of water mixed with sand and chemicals into shale rock to free trapped gas and can also be used in coal seam gas production, has also been the subject of criticism.
