Top Tiantan Award for Mexican film Beginning of Time at Beijing

The Mexican drama, Beginning of Time, by Bernardo Arellano won the best movie award at the fifth edition of the Beijing International Film Festival, which closed on April 23.

The Mexican drama, , by Bernardo Arellano won the best movie award at the fifth edition of the Beijing International Film Festival, which closed on April 23. The top Tiantan Prize was presented to the director by the president of the jury, celebrated French auteur Luc Besson, and the Hong Kong star, Jackie Chan. A haunting story of a couple in their nineties which has to make a living by selling food on the street after being abandoned by the son and losing its pension, Beginning of Time richly deserved the honour.

The four-part tale, Children, from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, about suffering teens as well as about a young woman forced to help her sick father commit suicide, clinched three trophies: cinematography, screenplay and best supporting actress for Eva Bandor.Jean-Jacques Annaud's Wolf Totem, a Chinese-French co-production, describing life in Mongolia after the Cultural Revolution, walked away with the Tiantan Prize for Best Visual Effects.

The top acting honours - for best actor and actress - went to Artem Tsypin for A White White Night, and to Yuliya Peresild for The Battle For Sevastopol.

The lone Indian entry in Competition, Prakash Babu's Fig Fruit and the Wasps, went home empty handed.
