As news of Britain voting to leave the European Union broke earlier on Friday, media outlets across the world responded to the news with reactions ranging from celebrations to shock.
The Guardian in one of its pieces termed the decision as ‘A sad day for Europe’ and said that the results would pose an “existential threat to entire European project”. All three Guardian writers on the vote to leave expressed dismay at the decision. “Catastrophe,” says one writer. “Britain has broken apart.”
The Sun, a British daily tabloid newspaper, focused on the victory of the ‘Leave’ camp. “A massive popular uprising against London elites was credited for the extraordinary result which defied almost every expert prediction,” it said in a positively celebratory article.

“No one really knows what happens now. The collective imagination leads to dark places,” a New York Times article said. “It (the result) could also weaken US diplomatic leverage in Europe,” The Wall Street Journal said.
German newspaper Bild published the referendum results with a picture of Remain campaigners and the headline ‘British OUT’.
Danish newspaper Politiken too expressed its shock with an image of dejected Remain campaigners on its website.
