Grand Canyon National Park has announced sweeping water conservation measures after flash flooding. The National Park's official page on X shared that the flooding severely damaged critical infrastructure in the inner canyon.
Beginning at noon on August 31, the park will implement Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim. The National Park Service (NPS) said the restrictions will remain in place for the foreseeable future while crews assess damage to the park’s water system.
The restrictions follow significant flash flooding in Bright Angel Canyon on August 29, which damaged the Transcanyon Waterline. The pipeline transports water from Roaring Springs to facilities on both the North and South rims. Officials said the damaged waterline has left the park with limited reserves. Hence, immediate conservation is essential.

Five key changes visitors should know
1. Overnight hotels inside the park will close. All concession-operated overnight lodging on the South Rim will stop accepting guests beginning August 31. The closure affects Xanterra-operated properties, which include El Tovar Hotel, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge and Phantom Ranch.

2. Campgrounds will switch to dry camping. Visitors can continue camping on the South Rim, but only under dry camping conditions. Water spigots at campgrounds will be shut off to conserve supplies. Restroom faucets will remain operational.
Campers can also access water at the Mather Campground check-in kiosk.
3. Campfires and charcoal grills are prohibited. Officials have imposed fire restrictions across the South Rim and the inner canyon. The order bans all wood-burning campfires, warming fires and charcoal barbecues. The restriction is intended to reduce water demand and minimise wildfire risks while resources remain strained.
4. Park remains open despite disruptions. Despite the restrictions, Grand Canyon National Park is not closing. Day-use access will continue, and several essential services will remain available. According to the NPS, South Rim food and beverage outlets, the Grand Canyon Clinic and the Post Office will continue operating.
However, some facilities may reduce their hours depending on water availability.
5. Water conservation becomes the priority. The National Park Service urged residents, employees and visitors to minimise water consumption while repairs continue. Officials asked visitors to keep showers under five minutes, turn off taps while brushing their teeth or shaving, wash only full laundry loads and report leaks immediately.
