A shooter gunned down at least 16 people in separate massacresacross Lewiston, Maine, Wednesday night, October 25. Another 50 or more people are believed to have been injured at multiple locations, including a bowling alley, CNN reported. Maine State Police took to Facebook to urge residents to protect themselves. “ALERT: There is an active shooter situation in the city of Lewiston. Law enforcement is asking people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at two locations right now. Again please stay off the streets and allow law enforcement to diffuse the situation. If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911,” the post says.
Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office released photos of the alleged suspect carrying a gun, seeking help to identify him. “Law enforcement in Androscoggin County are investigating two active shooter events. We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate. The suspect is still at large,” it wrote on Facebook.
It is also believed that the gunman may have opened fire at a third location, according to local reports. The Sun Journal reported that emergency personnel were called to separate shootings at a bowling alley, a restaurant and a Walmart distribution centre. Surrounding towns were called in to provide mutual aid, including New Hampshire.
Maine Gov. Janet Mills wrote in a post on X, “I am aware of and have been briefed on the active shooter situation in Lewiston. I urge all people in the area to follow the direction of State and local enforcement. I will to continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”
