A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighbourhood early Thursday, the city police confirmed to Fox5. A Cessna 550 bound for Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport crashed in the Murphy Canyon community around 3:47 am, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The number of people on board remains unknown as of now.

The crash left 15 homes and multiple vehicles ablaze, forcing evacuations in nearby blocks, the authorities said, per AP. “We have jet fuel all over the place,” Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy told reporters, adding, “Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now.”
While no injuries or deaths in relation to the crash have been reported so far, Eddy said it caused “a direct hit to multiple homes.” He described the scene in the densely populated Murphy Canyon neighbourhood affected by the crash as “a gigantic debris field.”
Christopher Moore, who lives near the crash site, told the outlet that he and his wife were awakened by a “loud bang.” Upon seeing smoke billowing from the scene, they grabbed their two kids and ran away.
“It was definitely horrifying for sure, but sometimes you’ve just got to drop your head and get to safety,” Moore said. Although an official reason behind the crash has yet to be revealed, Eddy explained that it was “very foggy” at the time of the incident.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be leading the probe.
