Tunisia’s prime minister on Saturday called for citizens to work together to defeat terrorism as thousands of tourists prepared to leave the country in wake of its worst terrorist attack ever when a man pulled a rifle out of his beach umbrella and killed 38 people, mostly tourists.
“The fight against terrorism is a national responsibility,” said a visibly exhausted Habib Essid.
He announced a string of tough measures to fight extremism, including examining the funding of organisations suspected of promoting radicalism, closing some 80 mosques outside government control and declaring certain mountainous zones military areas.
Meanwhile in Kuwait, the interior ministry said it had detained amongst others the owner of a vehicle which a suicide bomber used to get to a Shia mosque where he blew himself up, killing 27 and wounding 200 people mid-prayer.
The ministry said it was looking for the driver who vanished after Friday’s blast in Kuwait, which has been spared the rampant violence in neighbouring Iraq and recent spate of Islamic State bombings of Shia mosques in Saudi Arabia.
