This weekend, theatre aficionados in the city can get to enjoy a comedy play from across the borders. Called What Rubbish, the play is an adaptation of the Pakistani play Begum Meri Bibi Si by stand up comedian Umer Sharif, famous for plays such as Bakra Qiston Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Hai.
Adapted by Yatharth Art and Cultural Society, the play is a comedy of errors about a forgetful wedding planner. To give the play a proper Delhi angle, there are references to areas such as Chandni Chowk and Shahdara. “Chandni Chowk rings a bell with women for its dupattas and sarees, while Shahadra has the maximum rickshaws,” says Siddharth Gautam, the director of the play.
“Delhiites have a pompous nature where they will make big promises to girls before marriage, but forget all about them once they get the girl. We have shown this in a light-hearted manner,” says actor Rahul Vashisht, who plays Rehmat in the play.
Piyush Kaushik, a 22-year-old actor, plays the role of a woman called Rani in the play. “This is the first time I am playing the role of a lady. I wear a burkha with bangles, heavy make up, high heels, and pillows on my stomach to look fat for the role,” says Kaushik.
