Usha, a princess from Assam dreams about a prince and falls in love with him. She asks Chitralekha, a friend who has magical powers, to help her find him. Chitralekha identifies the man as Aniruddh, the prince of Dwarka and the grandson of Lord Krishna, and helps Usha meet him. When Usha’s father Vanasura, a Shiva devotee, gets to know about the two, he becomes furious. Later, Vanasura accepts Aniruddh and Usha after Lord Krishna and Shiva intervene.
This mythological love story from the Vishnu Puran will be performed in the city by Prateesha Suresh and troupe. Though the performance will be based on the Sattriya dance form of Assam, the show will also include other art forms, which will narrate the story.
“The show is titled Harihara Tatva, which means oneness of Hari (Vishnu) and Hara (Shiva). It has been my attempt to promote Sattriya dance form that lacks popularity in comparison with other Indian classical forms. We are trying to tell the story with more than one dance form and have included Bharatanatyam and a little bit of Odissi in the performance. The Kangra paintings of Chamba (Himachal Pradesh) take the act forward. We also have drummers from Assam,” says Suresh.
The dance recital has various artistes portraying the two characters. Suresh says, “The play has Usha, Aniruddh, Vishnu, Shiva and Vanasura. Few dancers will be playing double roles. The artiste who plays Aniruddh also portrays Shiva, and another artiste enacts both Usha and Vishnu. A female will be playing a male character.”
