Planet Earth is a photography project by eminent lensman Debatosh Sengupta. As the director, photo division of the ministry of information and broadcasting, Sengupta has travelled the world extensively.
He was present for historic inauguration of the first black President of South Africa in 1994 and is among the few photographers to have covered the the Non-Alignment Summit six times and the CHOGM five times. Still, says Sengupta, India continues to fascinate him.
The attempt in this project, says the photographer, is to document images that bring forth the beauty of nature in our country. He began his this documentation in 2000, a year after a devastating cyclone struck Orissa and he chanced upon a dead tortoise on the sea shore.
“India is inhabited by a diverse people: from the Negroid to the Mongoloid. The country has beautiful mountains in the north and is outlined by azure oceans. The ravines, the sand dunes and the forests, with their flora and fauna, are all here in abundance. Our rich culture and heritage only enhance the nation’s beauty,” he says.
