Pots and planters, plates and toys — all in beautiful, nature-friendly ceramic. You’ll find this and more at the popular annual exhibition by Delhi Blue Pottery Trust (DBPT) that starts December 2. Rechristened this year to be known as Ceramics Fest, this annual show of studio potters will compel you to shop, even if you just plan to visit for a dekko at the stunning decorative and utility pieces.
“Earlier it was called Potter’s Bazaar but we realised that people get an impression that works of traditional potters are on display. So, we renamed it as Ceramics Fest – where more than sixty studio potters from across India will be showcasing their works,” says Ravi Batra, founder-trustee, DBPT. In its sixth edition, the festival will have studio potters showcasing their works themselves.
“It was one of our prerequisites when we invited the potters. We want them to be present and interact with the visitors while explaining their work,” says Sudha Pillai, trustee, DBPT. The exhibition is organised with the aim to establish a tradition where the art of ceramics is affordable to everyone. Batra says, “Nothing will cost more than Rs 5,000, be it decorative or utility items.”
Different mediums, including stoneware and porcelain, have been used to make stunning products, which will be on display. “The porcelain we use is imported from China, because it isn’t available here. Also, the porcelain works have a luminescent transparency because they are fired at a much higher temperature, that is, 1300 degrees, as compared to stoneware which is fired at 1250-1270 degree celsius,” adds Batra.
The highlights of this year include hand-building, figurative and slip-trailing workshops. There’s also a ‘cooking in a clay pot’ workshop. The workshops are planned over the weekend and open to all. To add to this, there will be Delhi’s eclectic street food to make the event a wholesome experience.
