Eminent citizens of Delhi on Wednesday came out in support of the agitating Bhopal gas tragedy survivors and called upon the Prime Minister to resolve the issue of additional compensation for all survivors immediately.
About 20 of these prominent persons visited Jantar Mantar, where five women survivors and an activist are undertaking hunger strike without water since last three days.
Among the visitors were former justice Rajendra Sachar, general secretary of Communist Party of India (CPI) D Raja, veteran journalist Kuldip Nayyar, renowned photographer Raghu Rai, legal scholar Usha Ramanathan, columnist Praful Bidwai, secretary of All India Progressive Womens’ Association Kavita Krishnan and human rights activist Gautam Navlakha.
Also representatives of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) and Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association (JTSA) visited the protest site. All of them signed an open letter to the PM calling for immediate resolution of the issues raised by the survivors' organisations.
The five organisations that are leading the dharna and hunger strike without water said they had not received any communication from the government so far. They organisations said that in the last four years, they have written 15 letters to the Central government including four to the current regime and none of them have been answered.
Leaders of the survivors' organisations also called upon the Prime Minister to ensure that American Dow Chemical Company does not get away with its disrespect for Indian courts. Dow Chemical did not appear before the Bhopal District court to which it was summoned on Wednesday.
