I am not an intellectual person, says Irrfan Khan

The actor says that when he joined the film industry, he wanted to entertain, but was never offered those roles.

National-Award-­winning actor Irrfan Khan has carved a niche for himself not only in Bollywood, but also in Hollywood. However, when the actor’s name appears in the credits of a film, one expects the film to be more than a regular masala film. Asked if he is ever tempted to do a typical “masala” film, the Haider (2014) actor says, “I had a lot of ­temptation when I became actor ... I always wanted to entertain people, but the kind of roles that came to me were different, I had no choice. I wasn’t in a position to pick and choose. However, now the very definition of masala film ­is ­changing.”

He further says that when choosing a film, he looks for what connects with the audience, and that is what prompted him to choose his latest film, Piku. “I am not an intellectual person, or a deep person. I chose this film because it had an intense value. Like very small details — Piku is a name of both a boy and a girl. And the way definitions are changing today, Piku is handling both. She has dreams and aspirations of a girl but responsibilities of a boy,” says the actor who will soon be seen in the Hollywood film Inferno.
