I am the brand ambassador for women: Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan says not just young heroines, he likes to promote the women in his films.

He’s been the debut hero for Deepika Padukone (Om Shanti Om; 2007) and Anushka Sharma (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; 2008). More recently, the 51-year-old worked with 23-year-old Alia Bhatt in Dear Zindagi and will be seen alongside 31-year-old Mahira Khan in his next film.

Ask him how it feels to work with such young ladies, and prompt comes his reply: “Actually, every actor does that (work with younger heroines). Somehow, only I get talked and written about (laughs). I know some actors who have worked with much younger heroines than my co-stars. But maybe because I am a romantic hero, it becomes a thing or maybe heroines are so important in my films that they make it a thing (sic).”

“I hope that continues in future, too. I’ve made a concentrated effort to make sure that all my career — may be barring a couple of films that were action oriented — that the lady plays a more important part in my film,” says Khan who has worked in over 80 films in his career spanning two and half decades.

Personally too, SRK admits that he likes to do films that keep women in the centre and are not necessarily based on a hero. “I like talking, in my own subtle way, about women being the hero in my film – whether it’s a comedy film like Chennai Express or an important film like Chak De India, or for that matter, slice of life movie like Dear Zindagi,” he says.
