National awards: Ship of Theseus wins best film, Jolly LLB best Hindi film

Shahid, Jolly LLB and Ship of Theseus emerged as the big winners when the 61st National Awards were announced on Wednesday. Read on.

Ship Of Theseus

has been adjudged as the best feature film for the 61st National Film Awards, while Hansal Mehta has been named for best direction for the movie Shahid. The winners were announced here on Wednesday.

The best actor award was shared by Rajkumar Rao for Shahid and Suraj Venjaramoodu for Perariyathavar. Geetanjali Thapa has won best actress for Hindi film Liar's Dice.

Actor Saurabh Shukla grabbed the award for best supporting actor for Jolly LLB while the award for best supporting actress was shared by Amruta Subhash for Astu and Alia El Kashif for Ship Of Theseus.

Pranjal Dua's Chidiya Ud won him the best director award for short film. Kaphal was awarded the best children's film.

Best film: Ship of Theseus
Ship Of Theseus is the story about an unusual photographer, an erudite Jain monk and a young stock broker told through different segments which finally unite them through a strange circumstance. According to the jury, the film "depicts issues of intuitive brilliance, metaphysical belief and intricate morality in a world full of contradictions".

On the other hand, Suraj's "dignified and quiet" portrayal of a man on the lower margins of the society, has been applauded as the actor "soulfully brought out (the character) with subtle body language and eyes which transcend words".Best director: Hansal Mehta



"It is an inspiring testament to the human spirit," said the jury members. Hansal Mehta's direction in the "remarkably handled" film has been lauded.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was named as the best film in the wholesome entertainment category. Starring Farhan Akhtar in the lead role, the film not only won critics' appreciation but the audience loved it too, making it a huge box office success.

Bollywood film Jolly LLB was named the best Hindi film, while director Nishtha Jain's Gulabi Gang was adjudged the best film on social issues. Gulabi Gang is recognised for its powerful depiction of a crusader taking viewers deeper into the continuing struggles of the rural Indian women.





Purab Kohli-starrer Jal won the best special effects award.

Nishtha Jain's documentary film Gulabi Gang received National Award for best film on social issues while Rangbhoomi bagged the National Award for best non-feature film.



John Abraham-Nargis Fakhri-starrer Madras Cafe won the National Award for best sound design.



The Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration went to Tamil film Thalaimuraigal. Ritiesh Deshmukh's Marathi production Yellow and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer bagged the special jury award.
