Director Manish Gupta, who wrote Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar (2005), studied mechanical engineering in Bandra. It was during his student days that Gupta first heard about the inhuman incidents of ragging across colleges in the interiors of the country. This angered him and resulted into the making of his forthcoming film Hostel based on the crime. The film stars Vatsal Seth, Tulip Joshi and Mukesh Tiwari and is releasing on December 31.
Gupta, who has never stayed in a hostel himself, but had friends from other colleges who shared their experiences with him. “I heard an inhuman story of a boy who would be stripped naked, made to dance and get raped by a senior every night. I was 17 then. First I though it was a fictitious story, but then I met this boy and it angered me that people would stoop to such levels.”
This fury, Gupta says, towards ragging kept getting fuelled by reports that appeared regular on ragging. “People have lost their eye, arm, and even commit suicide when subjected to ragging. It’s worse than terrorism. I have taken different cases based on real life incidents and made a fictitious story about how brilliant student suffer from this mindless crime.”
Revealing that one of the characters, a bully, Akshay is based on director Akshay Shere who made Emotional Atyachar. He says, “Shere used to assist Ramu when I was writing Sarkar. During our conversation, he boasted of being a bully and went on to say how boys left college because of him. I could see the sense of machismo he felt while talking about it. Such people should be exposed.” He adds, “Shere is aware and embarrassed that I have based a character on him and has requested me not to use his name in the media. But a culprit is a culprit,” he signs off.
