With Bollywood filmmakers churning out several female-fronted films and stronger roles written for women, Kaalakaandi actor Shenaz Treasury feels that there’s “still room for many more.”
She says, “It’s great to see that there has been a wave of stronger female characters coming out of Bollywood. One of my favourite films last year was Lipstick under My Burkha, and I would love to make films where female protagonists have real opinions and the power to make things happen.”
Not just films in entirety but even the role that female actors are playing on-screen have undergone transformation, and the Delhi Belly (2011) actor agrees that female actors today are no longer interested in playing damsels-in-distress, and are rather taking up stronger characters.
On the kind of roles she would want to play, Shenaz, who last starred in the film Kaalakaandi, says, “I do like playing smart women who can be sexy, and are taken seriously. I’m excited to play any character that is based in reality. And I’d be even more excited if I can add a comic element to my role.”

{{/usCountry}}She adds, “I do not take up films where I have nothing to do. I hate when they portray women as just sex symbols in short skirts, running around playing dumb. I refuse to watch such films or be in such films.”
Asked if there are any new projects in the pipeline, the actor shares, “Well, I wrote a script called Dreading My Wedding, which had a strong female lead, a few years ago, that I’d love to see made now.”
