The Narendra Modi government is upgrading the Chandikhole-Bhadrak section of the Kolkata-Chennai Golden Quadrilateral corridor to a six-lane highway.
The road covers states of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, serving as the primary arterial road linking the coastal areas of Odisha, Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari tweeted.
The section will accomodate interstate traffic carrying agricultural, manufactured and industrial products, and local mining traffic. The highway also links popular tourist spots like the Aradadi Akhandalmani Temple, Maa Biraja Temple, Sveta Baraha, Bhadrakali Temple, Dhamnagar, Dhamra Port and Chandbali river port.
“Under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, we are ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow while also augmenting the road capacity, speed, and safety. These upgrades will match the benchmarks for National Highways and contribute towards the economic development of the region, in addition to boosting interstate goods and passenger movement”, Gadkari added.
The Golden Quadrilateral is India's longest highway network with a total length of 5,846 kilometres. It ranks fifth in the list of longest highways in the world. It is the dream project of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had laid the foundation in 1999.
The Golden Quadrilateral connects four metropolitan cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, forming a quadrilateral. The project was planned at the initial budget of ₹600 billion, and was delayed due to land acquisition issues. The project commenced in 2001 and was completed in 2012 at ₹308 billion.
The Golden Quadrilateral passes through 12 states and a union territory. The project is managed by the National Highways Authority of India. It consists of national highways like 2, 4,5, 8 and 60. It stretches from Kolkata to Delhi at 1,563 kilometres, Delhi to Mumbai at 1,419 kilometres, Mumbai to Chennai at 1,290 kilometres and Kolkata to Chennai at 1,684 kilometres.
