Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister highlighted Tamil Nadu’s long-standing association with the Tata Group and said the new plant further strengthens the state’s position as a key automotive and manufacturing hub. He added that the project would support job creation, innovation and industrial growth in the region.

The Panapakkam plant combines advanced manufacturing processes with a skilled shopfloor workforce drawn from across Tamil Nadu. Many of the technicians are part of Tata Motors’ Lakshya programme, an earn-while-you-learn initiative that enables shopfloor employees to progress into engineering and management roles. Selected polytechnic graduates underwent five months of hands-on training at JLR facilities and also have the opportunity to pursue a company-sponsored B.Tech degree while working.

Vehicle production at the plant will be ramped up in phases. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to reach an annual capacity of up to 2.5 lakh vehicles over the next five to seven years, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles plans to invest around 9,000 crore in the Panapakkam facility over time. The project has the potential to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Sustainability at the core

Sustainability is a key focus of the Panapakkam plant. The facility has been designed to run entirely on renewable energy and aims to be water positive. With an emphasis on efficiency and reduced emissions, the plant follows stringent global environmental standards.
