American electric automaker Tesla is set to discontinue full self-driving (FSD) vehicle purchases from February 14, 2026, onwards. Additionally, Tesla would shift to a subscription-only model from February 15, stated Elon Musk in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter).
FSD Incident in 2019
The subscription would allow users to enjoy the fully self-driving feature whenever they need it by paying the subscription fees. However, the company has recently faced criticism and backlash after a U.S. jury found that a Model S utilising its fully self-driving vehicle was involved in an accident which severely injured a pedestrian while killing the other in 2019.

While Tesla blamed George McGee, who was in the driver’s seat during the crash, plaintiffs have argued that the autopilot system should have detected passengers and applied brakes automatically, after which Tesla was asked to pay $243 million for punitive and compensatory damages. Not only that, but there have been multiple crashes involving the full self-driving Tesla cars.

Tesla to open new store in India
{{/usCountry}}This news comes after the company announced it would expand its footprint in India after the announcement of a third store opening in the country. The company, on X (formerly Twitter), announced that it will open its third and newest touchpoint in Bengaluru. The touchpoint in Bengaluru is expected to boast four Supercharger stations, much like the touchpoints in Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Aerocity in New Delhi.

FSD to come to India?
Tesla has stated that it intends to introduce fully self-driving features to the Indian market after India clarifies its stance on level four or five autonomous driving vehicles. Tesla, on its Indian website, continues to offer FSD features for a premium of ₹6 lakh. Tesla currently boasts only one car in its portfolio, the Model Y. The Tesla Model Y in India is available with two different battery packs: a 60 kWh battery pack and a 75 kWh battery pack.
Additionally, the Model Y sold in India is only available with a rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant, as opposed to the all-wheel drive (AWD) variants sold globally. The Tesla Model Y boasts two variants, including the rear-wheel drive variant equipped with the 60-kWH battery pack, which has a claimed range of 500 km. The long-range rear-wheel drive variant, on the other hand, is powered by the 75-kWH battery pack, with a claimed range of 622 km.
