Punjab HC gets Lisa Gill as 47th judge

The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday received the communication about final clearance of advocate Lisa Gill’s name for judgeship by the President of India.

The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday received the communication about final clearance of advocate Lisa Gill’s name for judgeship by the President of India.

She is likely to be administered oath of office and secrecy by the chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul by March 31.

As of now there are six lady judges in Punjab and Haryana high court out of the total strength of 46. These are justices Daya Chaudhary, Sabina, Ritu Bahri, Rekha Mittal, Anita Chaudhry and Navita Singh.

Gill is elder daughter of justice(retd.) Harphul Singh Brar who was Punjab and Haryana high court judge from March 15, 1991 to July 29, 1999. Justice Brar is functioning as Chief Commissioner of Gurudwara Election Commission since November, 2009.

Gill is serving as additional standing counsel for the UT Chandigarh for the last around 10 years. Her husband Gurinder Singh Gill is also a practicing advocate in the high court and her younger sister Anu Pal was appointed assistant advocate general in Punjab Advocate General office in April 2010.

Names of 5 advocates pending

Names of of five advocates recommended by the high court collegium for judgeship in December last year are still pending with the Supreme Court. These are union law and justice minister Kapil Sibal’s cousin brother Deepak Sibal, senior advocate Amit Rawal and advocates Jaishree Thakur, Raj Mohan Singh and BS Walia.
