A local court on Tuesday framed charges of rape and criminal intimidation against Arvind Thakur, a city-based lawyer. A practising lawyer at the Chandigarh court, Thakur has been charged under Sections 376 (rape), 417 (cheating), 493 (cohabitation) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC on the complaint of a 22-year-old woman, who had accused him of rape.

The court has granted him anticipatory bail, but asked him to remain present during the next date of hearing.

Victim’s counsel, AS Chahal, said they had already challenged the anticipatory bail in the high court granted to the accused on the grounds that it was “without proper reasoning”. The case will be heard on Thursday.

The complainant had alleged domestic violence and rape against Thakur. The woman said she came from Naraingarh in Haryana in 2012 and had a dispute with her husband.

She came in touch with the lawyer, who told her that he would fight her case in the court and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

She had alleged that the accused had also assured her an accommodation in the city and provided her a flat in Sector 38 and started living with her. She had also submitted that the lawyer married her and later she came to know that he was already married.
