The Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) detected electricity theft at Shastri Nagar in Manimajra, where 20 e-rickshaws were found being charged through an unauthorised connection, officials said on Thursday.

The e-rickshaws were drawing a combined load of around 30 kilowatts (kW). During an inspection, enforcement teams found that the consumer, despite having a registered electricity connection, had tapped into CPDL’s low-voltage mains to supply power directly for charging the vehicles, bypassing the authorised distribution system.
Officials said the unauthorised connection posed a potential safety risk in addition to causing financial losses. The company is analysing electricity consumption at e-rickshaw charging stations across Chandigarh to check whether their usage corresponds with their sanctioned loads.
CPDL said enforcement drives would continue across the city to identify violations and protect the electricity distribution network. It urged consumers to avoid unauthorised connections and use electricity only through approved supply arrangements.
The company said regular inspections aim to curb power theft and ensure a safe and reliable electricity supply.
