A Panchkula woman has alleged that her husband was falsely presented to her family as a BA graduate before marriage, while he had studied only up to Class 5, leading her family to agree to the marriage and spend lakhs of rupees on the wedding functions.
The allegations are part of an FIR registered at Pinjore police station on August 22 against the woman’s husband. She also levelled allegations against the accused’s sister and another woman who allegedly acted as a marriage mediator. A case has been registered under Sections 85 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the FIR, the 29-year-old complainant, a BSc nursing graduate, alleged that her family was told before the marriage that her husband was a BA graduate, a teetotaller and a person of good character. She alleged that these representations were false and that the truth about his educational qualification came to light later during proceedings concerning annulment of the marriage. She married the accused in September 2025.
The complainant further alleged that her family spent around ₹40 lakh on the wedding and another ₹ 5 to 6 lakh on the bridal attire, makeup and pre-wedding functions. She also alleged that gold ornaments and several household and dowry articles were given at the time of marriage.

{{/usCountry}}The woman alleged that after the marriage, her husband subjected her to mental harassment, restricted her movements, neglected her medical needs and allegedly assaulted her during an incident in May this year. She further alleged that her husband and his sister retained her dowry.
The complainant also alleged that her husband was a habitual consumer of intoxicating substances and had concealed his alleged relationship with another woman before the marriage.
Police said the case was registered after an inquiry by the Women Cell and directions from senior officers.
