A court on Thursday directed Facebook and Instagram to remove an allegedly AI-generated objectionable video featuring Punjab legislator Sukhpal Singh Khaira within 72 hours, after he approached the court alleging that the content was fabricated and defamatory.
Civil judge (junior division) Kaushal Kumar Yadav passed the interim order while hearing Khaira’s plea seeking protection against the circulation of the video and other allegedly defamatory material.
According to the plea, the video was created using his recognisable facial features, beard and turbaned appearance, which were digitally superimposed on an artificially generated body shown wearing an off-shoulder dress. The MLA from Bholath alleged that the video was false, fabricated and intended to damage his reputation.
Khaira told the court that the identity of the persons behind the accounts was not known. The court, at the interim stage, directed the concerned social media platforms to take down and disable access to the identified content and URLs within 72 hours of receiving a copy of the order.
The court observed that Khaira had established a prima facie case for the grant of interim relief and that continued circulation of the allegedly defamatory material could cause irreparable injury to his reputation.

{{/usCountry}}Khaira has also sought a permanent injunction restraining the defendants from publishing, uploading or circulating the allegedly defamatory material, besides damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation. The main suit, including Khaira’s plea for a permanent injunction and damages, will be decided separately.
