Directing the sugar dealers that their stock should not exceed 4,000 quintals (400 tonnes) at any time or place, the Haryana government on Friday barred them from holding stock for more than 30 days from the date of receipt.
The directions were issued following the union government issued an order under the essential commodities Act, 1955, read with the sugar (control) order, 2025. The order prescribes stock-holding limits for sugar dealers with the objective of preventing hoarding and ensuring adequate availability of sugar in the market.
An official spokesperson of the Haryana food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department said that, according to the order, no sugar dealer can hold sugar stock for a period exceeding 30 days from the date of receipt. “No dealer shall keep sugar stock exceeding 4,000 quintals (400 tonnes) at any time or place,” the spokesperson added.
The government has directed that all sugar dealers are also required to register themselves on the department of food and public distribution (DFPD) portal and declare their sugar stock position immediately. Thereafter, they are required to update the stock position regularly every Friday.
The order will remain effective from August 1, 2026 to November 30, 2026. Failure to register on the portal, or furnishing incorrect, incomplete or delayed information, will be viewed seriously. Strict action under the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 will be initiated against defaulting entities, the spokesperson warned, advising the general public not to indulge in panic buying or unnecessary stocking of sugar.

{{/usCountry}}Assuring that the availability and prices of sugar in the market are being monitored closely, the state government has asked the consumers to report any instance of hoarding, excessive stocking or unreasonable pricing of sugar to the concerned district food and supplies controller office.
The spokesperson said that the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department is taking all necessary measures to ensure adequate availability and orderly supply of sugar across the state.
