A 38-year-old woman died after the roof of her house collapsed during heavy rain in Shatabgarh village near Machhiwara on Thursday. Her daughter and a neighbour have sustained minor injuries in the incident, police said.

The deceased, identified as Inderjit Kaur, a widow, was inside the house with her daughter and a neighbour when the roof of an upper floor suddenly collapsed, trapping all three beneath the debris.
Hearing their cries for help, villagers rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. After several minutes of efforts, they pulled the three women out of the rubble and shifted them to Samrala Civil Hospital.
According to the neighbours, doctors declared Inderjit Kaur dead on arrival. Her daughter and a neighbour, who were present inside the house at the time of the incident and suffered minor injuries, were discharged after receiving first aid.
Villagers attributed the collapse to incessant rainfall that they said had weakened the structure of the house.
Police said the body has been sent for autopsy and a probe is on.
