A new parcel cargo train service linking Sahnewal in Punjab with Mundiyampakkam in Tamil Nadu earned Northern Railway’s Ferozepur Division ₹15.63 lakh on its maiden trip on Saturday. The service is aimed at facilitating the movement of commercial goods between Punjab’s industrial centres and southern India.

The train, which departed from Sahnewal on Saturday, comprises 16 high-capacity Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) parcel vans with a combined carrying capacity of 392 tonnes. Its inaugural consignment included packaged food products and machinery parts.
The service will operate for six years on a round-trip basis, providing businesses with an additional rail-based option for transporting goods between the two regions. Senior divisional commercial manager (Freight) Paramdeep Singh Saini said the service would offer businesses a convenient freight transportation option and strengthen rail connectivity between industrial hubs in northern and southern India. “The initiative is part of efforts to modernise railway parcel services and expand opportunities for commercial freight movement,” he added.
