Punjab: Nearly 6 lakh students left govt schools during AAP tenure, says Channi

Jalandhar member of Parliament Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday claimed that contrary to AAP government’s claims of revolution in the education sector, 5.98 lakh students had actually left government schools across the state over the past four-and-a-half years.

The MP pulled up district education officials for not providing sufficient data related to sanctioned posts of teachers and those lying vacant. (HT File)

“In March 2022, when I was the chief minister, 29.62 lakh students were enrolled in government schools. Now, according to the data presented by education minister Harjot Singh Bains in Vidhan Sabha in July, the number has dropped to 23.64 lakh,” said Channi, demanding a clarification from the government on the slide.

The MP was speaking on the sidelines of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting to review implementation of central government schemes and various development works in Jalandhar.

Channi, who was accompanied with Jalandhar MLAs Pargat Singh and Avtar Singh Junior, also alleged that while uniform fabric had already been provided by the central government, students were still awaiting stitching of uniforms half way into the academic session.
