Union minister of culture and tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday said the suffering and sacrifices endured by people during the Partition must be remembered to ensure that such a “horror” is never repeated, stressing the need to preserve the country’s unity and harmony.
Speaking at an event marking the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day at the Golden Jubilee Auditorium, Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, Shekhawat said a nation that does not know, understand or take pride in history can never progress.
“Today’s India walks with heritage and development together, and we must ensure that our children are taught the true history of Partition, because only a correct understanding of history will give the coming generation the direction to build a secure, prosperous and developed India by 2047,” he said.
BJP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh, and Rajya Sabha MPs Vikramjit Singh Sahney and Ashok Kumar Mittal were also present at the event. In his address, Chugh said Punjab bore the deepest wounds of Partition, with the violence spreading from Rawalpindi to Lahore.

{{/usCountry}}Dhillon said Punjab itself was divided into two, uprooting thousands of families and forcing them to leave behind their homes, land, property, and loved ones.
“Hardly any Punjabi family remained untouched by the tragedy, and the wounds of that period still live on in the collective memory,” he said.
