Gurugram Metro Phase 2: ₹1,409cr World Bank loan proposal approved

The revised tender covers civil works, including track laying, stations and some double-decker stretches; traction and design were removed from the proposal.

The World Bank has approved a revised ₹1,409 crore loan proposal for the second phase of the Gurugram metro, with the tender now under evaluation by senior officials of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) and Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC), officials said on Tuesday.

The loan proposal was submitted in June for the 13km corridor from Sector 9 to Cyber Hub. A senior GMRL official said the revised tender covers civil construction, including track laying, station construction and certain double-decker stretches. “We had removed the traction and design components, as the World Bank was not funding the total requirement of ₹2,700 crore. This tender is now approved and is under evaluation of the senior GMRL officials, including the managing director,” he said. Once approved, the tendering process will be initiated.

The corridor will have 14 stations, including Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phase 4, Udyog Vihar Phase 5 and Cyber City, besides a spur towards the Gurugram railway station. It will interchange with the existing Rapid Metro and Namo Bharat Rail corridor.

The girders, each 28 metres long, are being cast at the Sector 33 casting yard and will be launched using heavy cranes, officials said.

Land acquisition near Islampur and Basai is also being expedited for the metro depot and station. A high-level meeting in Chandigarh this week will review the project, officials said.

Chander Shekhar Khare, managing director, GMRL, said, “This is a high-priority project, and all efforts are being made to meet the timelines.”
