The traffic police in the city have gone beyond counting vehicles to mapping the road itself, pinpointing 153 locations where cuts, U-turns, service lanes, parking stretches or entry and exit points could be contributing to congestion and safety risks on the Polytechnic-Chinhat corridor.
The exercise is part of a wider traffic-improvement plan for the Ayodhya Road corridor being undertaken in compliance with directions of the Allahabad high court. DCP (traffic) Raveena Tyagi said each of the 153 points had been separately documented and georeferenced using latitude and longitude coordinates, creating a location-specific blueprint for proposed interventions.
“Over the past week, traffic police teams conducted a detailed ground survey of 10 road stretches, studying traffic flow, effective road width, the condition of main roads and service lanes, junctions, cuts and U-turns, entry and exit points, parking, pedestrian movement and road-safety concerns,” the DCP said.
The survey covered both directions between Polytechnic and Chinhat as well as adjoining stretches, including the Chinhat-Kathauta route, the Kamta-Awadh bus stand area, the Kamta-Vijayipur service road and the Vijayipur underpass-IGP Chauraha stretch.

A committee headed by the DCP (traffic) conducted a joint inspection with officials from Vibhuti Khand police, Lucknow Development Authority, Lucknow Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department and Regional Transport Office.

{{/usCountry}}Rather than treating all 153 locations alike, officials discussed their technical feasibility, urgency and likely impact on traffic flow and road safety, and sought suggestions from the departments responsible for implementing the proposed measures.
The committee directed that the proposed works be divided according to their nature and priority. Measures that can be executed within the existing road infrastructure and available resources are to be taken up first, while larger, long-term interventions will undergo technical assessment and require inter-departmental coordination.
A traffic police official said the exercise was intended to create a point-by-point intervention plan rather than a broad proposal for the entire corridor.
The Polytechnic-Chinhat stretch has been taken up as the first phase of the larger exercise ordered in connection with improving traffic management on the Ayodhya Road corridor. A multi-department committee headed by the DCP (traffic) has already held three meetings to discuss road infrastructure, traffic pressure points and short- and long-term solutions.
The latest exercise is expected to help departments move from identifying problems to assigning specific interventions and priorities, with the stated aim of making the corridor smoother and safer for commuters.
Meanwhile, the Polytechnic-Chinhat stretch was inspected on Saturday by a committee constituted in compliance with a high court order, with officials reviewing traffic management, road infrastructure and safety arrangements along the route.
Officials from the traffic police, Vibhuti Khand police, Lucknow Development Authority, Lucknow Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department and Regional Transport Office took part in the joint inspection.
The team assessed the road’s present condition, traffic movement and other issues affecting commuter safety and convenience. Officials of the departments concerned were directed to take corrective measures on issues falling under their respective jurisdictions.
