Noida: An elderly couple was allegedly duped of ₹58 lakh in a digital arrest case last week, a police officer said on Friday.

Police registered a cheating case under relevant sections of the BNS and the IT Act, the officer said.
Police said the couple, who did not wish to be identified, resided in a high-rise in Noida’s Sector 137.
The victims alleged in their complaint that on August 11, an unidentified man called at their landline number. “The caller introduced himself as a customer care executive of a telecom company and alleged that my wife’s Aadhaar card and bank account were involved in a money laundering case,” reads the FIR.
Police said the suspect subsequently contacted the victims on WhatsApp. “Threatening dire consequences, the suspects put them under digital arrest,” said the officer.
On the pretext of an investigation, the suspect allegedly made them transfer ₹58 lakh in seven transactions. Police said ₹44.50 lakh was transferred from the man’s account, while ₹13.80 lakh was transferred from the couple’s joint account.
“When the suspect disconnected all contact with the victims, they realised that they had fallen into a trap. A case was registered at the Cybercrime Branch police station on Wednesday, and a probe is underway,” said Vijay Rana, station house officer, Cybercrime Branch.
