SHILLONG: Security forces on Sunday seized an AK-56 rifle and three pistols during a late-night operation in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district, police said on Monday.

Acting on an intelligence input, the district police conducted a search operation in a dense forest near Dura Bawegre village in the early hours of January 25.
Among the weapons seized from the spot included an AK-56 rifle, three pistols, a country-made double-barrel rifle, 100 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, detonators, shotgun cartridges and delay mechanisms used for explosive devices.
An improvised explosive device (IED) with a digital timer inside a pressure cooker was also seized. The device was defused by the district’s bomb disposal squad, officials said.
A case has been registered at Williamnagar police station under the Arms Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
An investigation is underway to trace the source of the weapons, police added.
