LUCKNOW: Award-winning filmmaker-producer Nusrat Durrani has advised Lucknow’s young generation to follow its madness and not inherit the nostalgia associated with the city. Durrani, who was brought up in Lucknow, said, “People of the city are trapped in a nostalgia that leaves very little space for new narratives. This nostalgia is not something the young people have to inherit... I am eager to hear the voice of the youth and the stories they have to tell about the city.”
The founder and former general manager of MTV World made the remarks during an interview with writer-director Valentina Trivedi on Monday. The interaction was held under the aegis of Lucknow Bioscope event Nayaab Nageene. Speaking on cinema, he said, “Entire subsets of humanity are left out of the stories we tell through our films. India has a 700 million strong population of women but there is a lack of content that centres around them. Similar is the case with indigenous tribes. They are also overlooked by cinema.”
During the interaction, Durrani also spoke about his new film ‘An American Prayer’, which was shot across seven cities across the world at the peak of the Covid pandemic in 2020. The movie, which will soon be released on streaming platforms, has already received appreciation from the state department in America.
When asked about his filmmaking, Durrani likened himself to a detective in search of untold stories. He also shared his desire to create a ‘new global mythology’ for India. “We are tied in a certain kind of filmmaking. To be an artist, one must be open and vulnerable to new experiences,” the celebrated filmmaker.
