The civic body’s tree authority has specifically named mango, apta, kanchan and shami trees, among others, and appealed to residents to avoid damaging them during Vijayadashami.

Under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, as amended in 2021, unauthorised burning, felling or damaging of trees is an offence. Violators can face a fine equal to the assessed value of the tree, up to ₹1 lakh, according to the civic notice.

“Citizens can report unauthorised tree felling, branch cutting or other damage to the assistant municipal commissioner and tree officer of the concerned ward office, or to the tree authority department,” said Ashok D Ghorpade, joint municipal commissioner and member secretary of the PMC tree authority.
