PUNE: Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar has urged citizens to report drug sales in their neighbourhoods, emphasising that public participation is essential to curbing narcotics trafficking, as enforcement efforts alone cannot tackle the problem.

“As long as demand for drugs continues, their supply will also persist. Citizens should take the initiative to prevent drug consumption and sale. If they notice drugs being sold in their neighbourhood, they should alert the police,” Kumar said at a motorcycle rally organised by the Pune police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell on October 21 under the Centre’s Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign.
The rally featured 76 riders from different states and Union territories, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Kumar urged citizens to report the sale of tobacco products, gutka and cigarettes near schools and colleges, calling for stricter vigilance around educational institutions.
Senior police officers, including joint commissioner Sanjay Darade, additional commissioner (crime) Tejaswi Satpute and deputy commissioner (crime) Gauhar Hasan, attended the programme.
The rally began at Nayagaon Phata in Kunjirwadi at 11.30 am and passed through several parts of the city before concluding at Chhatrapati Shivaji Preparatory and Primary School on Tilak Road.
