1 killed, 4 injured as truck crashes into people at immersion ghat in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: One person died and four were injured when a truck ran into a group of people at the Bailey Bodhanwala Ghat in Jharkhand ‘s Jamshedpur during the Durga Puja immersion late on Tuesday, police said.
Police said the truck driver lost control of the vehicle due to possible brake failure. The deceased was identified by the police as as Birendra Sharma,a resident of Kitadih under Bagbera police station area.
Kishore Kaushal, Jamshedpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) said the four injured were rushed to the Tata Main Hospital (TMH) where the condition of two persons was reported to be serious.
The injured have been identified as Hugra Mukhi, Abhimanyu Gorai, Gopal Gorai and Vijay Gorai, all from West Bengal’s West Midnapore district. They were members of the Kitadih Durga Puja Committee.
Witnesses told the police that the accident took place when the truck rolled down a slope to the imersion ghat and dragged about half-a-dozen peope to the river. Local residents alleged that the district authorities hadn’t deployed cranes and ambulances at the ghats like in previous years and it took some time before the injured could be shifted to the hospital.
Deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri and SSP Kishore Kaushal are camping at the ghat after shifting the injured people.
Jamshedpur (East) MLA Saryu Roy also reached the accident site while health minister Banna Gupta went to the hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured.
“The mishap at the Bailey Bodhanwala Ghat is shocking and very painful. I wish speedy recovery of the injured and expenses my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and injured. The East Singhbhum DC is instructed to take prompt action and ensure proper coordination to maintain law and order until all the immersions are completed,” Bana Gupta said in a post on social media.
