The Ranchi Cyber Crime police station issued an official legal notice to X Corp demanding user data for the handle @JPSCreformanch (JPSC JSSC REFORM MANCH). The account is accused of running an organised misinformation campaign targeting the government of Jharkhand.
The order, signed by DSP Pankaj Kumar on August 22, stems from a criminal investigation registered under the Kotwali police station case.
According to police documents, the targeted account repeatedly posted fabricated videos and images designed to incite public alarm and social unrest. Authorities highlighted a doctored video claiming the state government was actively cheating students, paired with misleading text alleging that state-sponsored goons were threatening the youth.
Additionally, the account is accused of falsely alleging widespread police brutality, fabricating claims that the state is abusing tribal officials, and using highly derogatory language to disrupt communal harmony.
Because of these posts, law enforcement is invoking Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, along with Section 69 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which compel digital intermediaries to assist agencies in tracking down users who threaten public order.
The Ranchi police asked X Corp’s legal team in Austin, Texas, to immediately hand over comprehensive identification data. This mandate includes the account creator’s full name, physical addresses, contact numbers, and registered email accounts.

The police also requested specific hardware information, such as the device makes, models, and unique IMEI numbers used to manage the platform.

SSP Rakesh Ranjan was not available for comment on the development.
District police urged the public to remain vigilant against social media rumours. It issued a critical advisory urging citizens to verify all social media news, videos, and messages before sharing them.
“Selfish, anti-social elements are deliberately spreading false, misleading, and unverified content to incite violence and trigger societal chaos. Acting on these malicious provocations can lead to severe legal consequences and disrupt public harmony. Citizens must not take the law into their own hands. Instead of making inflammatory content viral, immediately report suspicious posts to the local police. Stay vigilant, rely strictly on official sources, and cooperate with administration to maintain peace and brotherhood,” a statement from the SSP office reads.
