Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: Dimple Yadav will fight again from Kannauj, which SP has won since 1998

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.

The Samajwadi Party hasn’t lost from the Lok Sabha seat of Kannauj, the perfume capital of India, since 1998 and the Yadav family has been holding it for the last 20 years.

Three of its members of Parliament, SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, Congress’ Sheila Dixit and SP president Akhilesh Yadav, have become chief minister in different times. Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sheila Dixit have represented Kannauj once while Akhilesh won it three times in a row.

Akhilesh was the first politician to have won the seat thrice in a row. When Akhilesh vacated the seat after taking over as chief minister in 2012, his wife Dimple Yadav was elected unopposed in the by-poll and retained the seat in 2014 elections by a slender margin.

Both the Congress and the BJP have won it once each in 1984 and 1996 respectively. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia also contested from the high-profile constituency and won the election.
