Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: Old rivals to fight it out in UP’s Maharajganj

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.

Maharajganj is a parliamentary constituency in eastern Uttar Pradesh and the BJP seems to have a strong grip on the seat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has won the Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat five times in the last 30 years since 1989 and the Congress just once. The Samajwadi Party and Janata Dal have managed to bag the seat once each.

In 2014, the seat was won by the BJP’s Pankaj Choudhary, who has won five out of the eight Lok Sabha elections since 1989.

The Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat comes under Maharajganj district on the foothills of Himalayas and has five assembly segments of Pharenda, Nautanwa, Siswa, Maharajganj and Paniyara under it. The Kurmis, an OBC community, are the most dominant electorate and upper caste, as well as Banias, are also present in the region.
