The Shrawasti parliamentary constituency came into existence in 2008 under the recommendation of the Delimitation Commission.

Before it was restructured, the constituency was known as Balrampur and was represented by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and social activist Nanaji Deshmukh.

The Shrawasti Lok Sabha seat has five assembly segments of Bhinga, Shrawasti, Tulsipur, Gainsari and Balrampur under it. It is a Buddhist pilgrimage centre and has been associated with Buddhism as well as Hinduism since ancient times.
In the first election held after the constituency was restructured, Vinay Kumar Pandey of the Congress won the seat in 2009. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Daddan Mishra defeated Samajwadi Party’s Ateeq Ahmed to win the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

Sahu, a sub-community within OBCs, are influential in the Shrawasti Lok Sabha seat and Dalits constitute around 18% of the population.
Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.
