Veteran India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has hinted that former England captain Eoin Morgan could be among the favourites to take over as Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach. The five-time IPL champions recently ended their long-standing association with Stephen Fleming after a couple of underwhelming seasons. CSK, one of the most successful teams in IPL history, have witnessed a decline in their fortunes over the past few years. With Fleming’s departure, the franchise is now looking for a fresh voice to bring new ideas, plans and an approach as they look to rebuild and return to their winning ways.
Ashwin suggested that Morgan’s name has emerged strongly in the discussions surrounding CSK’s next head coach, while also pointing to uncertainty over when the former England captain could take charge.
“I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly…; early discussions are on, no doubt. In this, two scenarios: Eoin Morgan- will he take it this year? Or someone else builds the team in a mini auction, and he takes it later?" Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

The former England captain has never held a head coaching role, either at the international level or in franchise cricket. Since retiring from professional cricket in 2023, Morgan has largely been involved in commentary and punditry. However, he remains one of the sharpest minds in world cricket, having played a key role in England’s transformation into a dominant white-ball side. Morgan was at the helm when England won their maiden 50-over World Cup title in 2019 on home soil. His leadership, tactical understanding and aggressive approach have made him a respected figure in the game.

He believes Dhoni’s presence could help the franchise navigate the coaching change, particularly with the next mega auction just a year away.
“I have a strong hunch that under Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together… Personally, that route is the correct one. I still think so. Because the appointment will be a touch late. Because the mega auction is only one year away. … My strongest hunch is that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together. That’s my strongest hunch for at least the next one year," Ashwin said.
