New Zealand Women beat Bangladesh Women by 68 runs

Commentary

5:40 PM IST That's a wrap - Despite the overcast start to the day, threatening with the rain, we were treated to a couple of near-complete matches in Loughborough. Overall, it was an entertaining Saturday, to say the least. The day started with a rain-shortened game featuring South Africa Women and Ireland Women that got trimmed to 18 overs per side, with the Proteas emerging victorious. Come the evening, the defending champions, New Zealand bossed in every department to get the better of Bangladesh. There will be a break on Sunday, and the warm-up fixtures will continue from Monday, 8th June, with West Indies Women taking on India Women, followed by the Women's Ashes battle as England Women go up against Australia Women. Both games will be played at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, and the first ball of the first match will be bowled at 9 am GMT. But for now, the other warm-up game in Derby is still underway between Sri Lanka Women and Pakistan Women. You can switch the tabs and follow all the updates from that game. Until then, enjoy the weekend, and stay safe. Cheers.
5:31 PM IST The victorious captain of New Zealand Women - Amelia Kerr says it was nice to get out there after a bit of a break. She is happy to see different people contributing in crucial phases, adding that the ball-striking from some of them was really pleasing to see. On Sharp and Devonshire, she says it was nice to see both of them stepping up and that it holds them in good stead heading into the World Cup. On Nensi, she calls her a skilful and accurate bowler who rarely misses the stumps and is always ready to put her hand up whenever the opportunity comes. On being asked about Sophie Devine's overall fitness, Kerr gives a very optimistic answer, saying that Devine won't be carrying drinks for the players in the World Cup and will be a key player for them in the big event.
5:29 PM IST The captain of Bangladesh Women - Nigar Sultana says that as a bowling unit, they conceded too many runs. They tried a few things, but it didn't work out. She says that they kept on losing wickets with the bat as well. She reckons Juairiya Ferdous was good with the bat, and she should have stayed for longer. Adds that Ritu has been good for the team till now and ends by saying that they will learn from this game and bounce back stronger.
5:25 PM IST Time to hear from the two captains...
5:25 PM IST Captain Kerr shines with the bat - A brilliant batting display from the Kiwi top order, losing just three wickets on the way to a commanding 193. Suzie Bates and Izzy Sharp set the tone, but both fell agonisingly short of their half-centuries. It barely slowed New Zealand down, though, as Amelia Kerr came in with aggressive intent from ball one and kept the runs flowing with a brilliant fifty. Decent contributions from Plimmer up top and a cameo from Devonshire in the death overs helped the Kiwis put up a total that always looked challenging.
5:21 PM IST A mountain too steep to climb - Chasing a huge total of 194, Bangladesh didn't get a good start as they lost two big wickets in Dilara Akter and Sharmin, being reduced to 19/2 inside four overs. But, Juairiya Ferdous came out with a positive intent, with Taj Nehar forming a responsible alliance to bail their side out of trouble. But just when it was taking a meaningful shape, both the set batters were dismissed in the span of three balls, with Bangladesh slipping from 51/2 to 66/5 first and then from 92/5 to 118/8, with Tahuhu and Nensi engineering those collapses respectively. And just like that, the onus fell completely on skipper Nigar Sultana to bail the team out of a rut. But they kept hovering at run-a-ball, and as a result, the asking rate had gone beyond reach. Sultana stayed unbeaten till the end, but found no stable partner at the other end.
5:20 PM IST New Zealand prove too hot to handle - One positive Bangladesh can take from this game is that they dragged it into the final over and saw out all 20 overs. More importantly, captain Nigar Sultana got some balls under her belt and will head into the next game with a bit of momentum, finishing unbeaten. Overall, it was an all-round performance from the defending champions, first with the bat and then, a rather collective effort with the ball, which will please them a lot. Nensi Patel was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up a brilliant four-for and proving her credentials ahead of the World Cup, justifying every bit why she is in that squad.
